I'll share with you the plants that can tough it out in south Louisiana.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.comBlogger94125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-53503285431697902302013-09-18T09:10:00.000-05:002013-09-18T09:10:08.722-05:00Mexican Bush SageThe plant that is getting the most attention from hummingbirds and butterflies is the Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha). I love the color and fuzziness of the flowers. It's about 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide and loves full sun. It hasn't bloomed much during the summer. I guess it was saving it's energy for slightly cooler temperatures.

I've had this salvia for a few years and its always been over shadowed by my other big salvia bush, the Indigo Spires Salvia. I've got lots of pictures of him in other blog posts. Indigo Spires blooms non stop from spring through fall. My Mexican Bush Sage was not as spectacular as my Indigo Spires, so I threw some fertilizer on it and hoped for the best. The fertilizer didn't help much mainly because I've got irises planted near the salvia and I think they sucked up most of the fertilizer! Anyways, its blooming nicely now and holding its own.

Now to talk about my Bat Face Cuphea (Cuphea llavea). This plant takes up an entire side of my flower bed! Its at least 3 feet around but it doesn't grow tall, just about 2 feet tall. It has pushed several other plants out of its way and grew right over them. It wants it's space and doesn't care how it gets it. If this plant were a person it would be pushy and selfish! Hummingbirds love this plant.

I've always loved the interesting shape of the flowers. I think it does look like a bat's face. This plant can stand up to the hot Louisiana summers and drought conditions.

This is Ginger laying in my flower bed being lazy. I planted her a cat nip plant but it died sometime over the summer. I'll get her a new one in the spring.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-70070982760361984132013-07-02T15:12:00.000-05:002013-07-02T15:12:22.875-05:00Summer Garden PicturesYikes! Its been a long time since I posted a blog...not much happening right now to blog about. Its summer time in Louisiana and I've been staying indoors mostly. I'm ready for fall! Here's some pictures of my garden.

This is two peanut plants growing in a big pot. We had to put chicken wire around the pot because our outside cat Ginger kept getting in the pot. I hope they make lots of peanuts because Dave loves to eat peanuts.

This is a hummingbird magnet if there were still hummingbirds in my yard. Last year they loved this plant, and now they are gone. Haven't seen a hummingbird in a long time. I ordered this plant from a mail order site, High Country Gardens. They mostly sell plants that are drought tolerant. I never have to water this plant, only gets water when it rains.

My butterfly bush is huge! Its about 6 feet tall. Has tons of flowers on it but I haven't seen many butterflies on it. Butterflies and hummingbirds are scarce in my yard. I guess they are in someone else's garden...

This is a close up of the flower. If you're wondering what variety it is, its Nanho Blue. The flowers aren't blue, they are light purple.

My milkweed plants are doing great! Blooming like crazy. I haven't seen any monarch caterpillars yet, but they will come in time. Did you know that milkweed is the host plant for monarch butterflies? That means they only lay eggs on milkweed plants. Its important to have milkweed in your garden if you want monarch butterflies around!

Purple coneflowers are doing OK now. I need to dig it up and move it away from the milkweed and butterfly bush. You can't tell from the picture, but its getting squashed between the two plants!

Now to Dave's section of the garden. He grows spicy peppers and this one is Mucho Nacho Jalapeno. We have tons of this one. He has several more pepper plants but I didn't get pictures of all of them. Pepper plants are boring....

Banana peppers look about ready to pick. This pepper plant isn't spicy.

I put flea medicine on Max this morning and he ran out and tried to rub it off. Its been hot so he spends most of his time under the shed in the shade.

I will end with a picture of Ginger. She likes to sleep under the shed too!

Rabbit Foot Fern is one of my favorite ferns because it is so strange looking! It's best to grow this fern in a pot so the fuzzy growths can curl over the pot's edge. I'm not sure if they are a type of root, but fronds sprout from them. Here's some close up pictures!

This is my dog Max swimming in the river. We live next to the levees on the Mississippi River and this time of year the river overflows its banks and water reaches the levee. When you stand of top of the levee, you can see shadows of big catfish swimming in the water. Max loves to swim in the water but he can't go too far out because I don't let him off the leash. Red lantana that is a new and improved variety. Its called Bandana lantana and you can buy them in lots of colors. Its suppose to bloom longer and stay around 2 feet tall. For now its doing OK. Still pretty small, but its blooming. I bought this because butterflies love lantana.

Sorry about my finger in the picture! I'm taking these pictures with my phone and I didn't even realize my finger was in the way. Anyways, this is a staple in my flower bed, its a Victoria Blue Salvia. It blooms constantly and I love it. I have 3 of these salvias.

Its about 30 minute drive from Poverty Point State Park. There is so much to look at here, we stayed for 3 hours.

If you are a Civil War history buff, you know that capturing Vicksburg was the key to winning the War. The Confederate troops had an almost perfect spot in Vicksburg. With high bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, they could shoot down any Union ships that tried to sneak by. Grant tried three times to capture Vicksburg and he was finally successful. Grant had blocked off the Confederate troops food supply, leaving them only dogs, cats, and rats to eat. Finally the south surrendered.

The Military Park is a 16 mile driving tour of the Vicksburg battle grounds. The battle lines are well marked. Throughout the Park, there are buffs of special military men. There are also state memorials for every state in the War. I personally didn't like the Louisiana memorial. I took a picture of it and its basically a column with Louisiana written on it. Illinois has the most impressive memorial. I didn't realize how many Illinois men died at Vicksburg.
Its an open dome (what happens when it rains?) and the darker plaques are covered with the names of Illinois soldiers who served in the War. Even if you speak in a whisper, it echos loudly. In in middle of the floor is the Illinois state seal.
Dave is at the tunnel entrance. The Union troops were at the bottom of a huge hill and had to think up a way to get to Confederate troops. So they dug a tunnel! Once they tunneled to the hill, they dug ditches crisscrossing the hill until they were able to shoot at the Confederates.
All the pictures were taken from the Poverty Point State Historic Site visitor's center. They have a 20 minute video about the Indian mounds. I really liked the video, very informative. The last picture is actually a huge mound, the picture doesn't do it justice. You can also go on a driving tour and drive right up to the Indian mounds.

More deer tracks.
We had lots of fun at Poverty Point. Our camping spot was nice and clean and it was relatively quiet at night. I heard an owl a few times, but he was far away. It only costs $16 a night to stay there. On the night we stayed, it got down to 38 degrees! We weren't cold. We had our flannel lined sleeping bags plus our down comforter.
If tent or RV camping isn't your idea of roughing it, Poverty Point had cabins and lodges for rent. The cabins are very nice and overlook the water. You can fish from your back porch! Stayed tuned for my next post about Poverty Point State Historic Site, home to ancient Indian mounds!

It's been dry lately and he was looking for some water to soak in. Seeing the frog in the water bowl didn't surprise me at all, it happens all the time during summer months. Usually the frog lives underneath the water bowl and will come out to soak in the water whenever it feels like it.

This is a Plumeria that I grew from a cutting. You may recognize this flower if you've ever been to Hawaii, this is the flower used for leis. I've got my Plumeria growing in a pot and it can't be left outside when its cold. It's a hassle moving it in the shed when a cold night comes along. Then, in the morning, I have to move it back in the sun and then back in the shed at night. It's worth it for the flowers.

The Atchafalaya Swamp is one of my favorite places in Louisiana because it is filled with wildlife. We saw three alligators, lots of birds, and caught several types of fish. I was looking for snakes but didn't see any. Snakes are masters of camouflage and one was probably near me and I didn't even notice. We also have black bears in Louisiana and I'm still waiting to see one in person.
Back to my fishing trip, here are the pictures!

Alligator #1 (above) was a baby alligator, I'd say around 2 feet long. He was hiding in some bushes that draped down into the water. All I could see was his eyes sticking out of the water.

Alligator #2 (above) was a little bigger than the first, around 4 feet long. He was very shy and sneaky and I almost didn't get a picture of him. He was also hiding under some branches. I tried to get a better picture of him and my foot hit the side of the boat and scared him away!
The third alligator we saw was so shy I wasn't able to get close enough to take a picture. He was about the size of alligator #2.

This is the catfish my dad caught. This catfish didn't want to pose for a picture, it took me three shots to finally get a good picture. He didn't want to go in our ice chest (and later the frying pan!) and kept squirming around trying to break free and go back in the water. Did you know that catfish will make little grunting noises if you take them out of water?

This is Clematis jackmanii and it is a notoriously slow grower, but the flowers are worth it! Clematis is a slow growing vine and is available in many different flower colors. You can choose from purple, red, pink, and white. I've got mine growing on a chain link fence. The flowers are about 4 inches across.

If you want to have Monarchs in your garden, go to your local nursery center and ask for milkweed. Sometimes its labeled as butterfly weed, but its the same thing. Milkweed is the only host plant of this butterfly so its important to incorporate this plant in your garden.

This is one of my favorite salvias. Its called Victoria Blue Salvia (Salvia farinacea) and it starts blooming as soon as spring arrives. Right now its really the only plant blooming.
Here is a close up of the flower stalk. I've it planted at the front of my bed because it doesn't grow tall, I'd say around 18-20 inches tall. This is a perennial and doesn't require any extra effort. I like this plant so much that I bought 3 more plants last week.
A Louisiana Iris that started blooming a few days ago. I know I planted a red variety of Louisiana Iris but it hasn't bloomed yet. Hopefully it didn't die on me!
I will end with a picture of Mike, one of our inside cats. He is laying on an empty egg crate. He lays on the strangest things. He is a big cat, the egg crate is big enough to hold 25 eggs! Soon he will get a hair cut at the vet's office. I get him trimmed so he will be more comfortable during the summer.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-42359619673059073142012-03-25T17:41:00.000-05:002012-03-25T17:41:01.942-05:00Tunica Hills WMASunday morning we drove to Tunica Hills WMA. It was a perfect day for hiking! We didn't see any wildlife but we saw plenty signs of armadillos, turkey and deer.
These are pictures from the trail we hiked down to a dry creek bed. Some parts were steep with sharp drop offs. I was scared one of us might step on a copperhead snake but we didn't. With all the brown leaves on the ground they would be hard to spot.
Dry creek bed at the end of our hike. It was easy getting down to the creek but very difficult walking back up. The trail was so steep! Lots of animals had walked through the sand and I took pictures of the tracks.
There were lots of vendors selling pretty things but I didn't buy anything! I wanted to buy lots of paintings and other art work but I'm running out of wall space at my house.

We toured the plantation home and the most interesting fact I learned was how the plantation got its name. There is no connection to California or to Saint Francis but there is a link to a French phrase meaning "I don't have a penny left in my pocket". When you say that phrase in French, it sounds like San Francisco, hence the name. Running a sugar cane plantation costs money and the owner was said to say "I don't have a penny left in my pocket!" after paying all the bills. Neat factoid, right?
If you are ever in Garyville, LA make sure you stop by San Francisco Plantation. Tours of the house are $15 per adult and they are well worth the money. The tour guides dress in period attire and are very knowledgeable!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-53943867458618443372012-02-25T12:49:00.000-06:002012-02-25T12:49:30.112-06:00Aviation and Cypress Sawmill MuseumWe went to two museums housed in one big building in Patterson, LA. The full name is the Wedell Williams Aviation Museum and the Cypress Sawmill Museum. The museum is a division of Louisiana State Museum with free admission! Wedell and Williams were two guys from LA that were very good at flying/building airplanes. Here are some pictures!
This platform is where we watched a video telling us about the history of the planes on exhibit.

Next we walked over to the Cypress Sawmill Museum. The cypress trees were cut from the Atchafalaya Basin and the surrounding bayous in Patterson/Morgan City. For the most part, the logging equipment was on display. This was my favorite part because I like trees better than planes. I am in most of the pictures to show scale (not because I'm a camera hog!).
The park has a huge lake called Lake Chicot and some of the cabins are situated on the banks of the lake. We stayed in cabin #24 which happened to be by the lake with a fishing pier! We loved the park and will go back in spring. Here are a few pictures from our stay.

This is our cabin, although its more like a small trailer. It has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room. The cabin goes for $85/night. The best thing about our cabin was the boat launch/fishing pier located right behind the cabin!

We fished on the pier alot but never caught any fish.
There were a bunch of cypress trees at the edge of the lake.
This picture was taken at another part of the lake. The fishing pier was huge and extends far into the lake. We discovered an abandoned dog at the pier and he followed us around until we got in the truck and left.

Me with the dog. He was so nice! We called the park ranger and reported the lost dog but the rangers couldn't do anything about him. They don't have animal control in that parish so he will stay at the park until someone takes him home.

Next we went to the Louisiana State Arboretum, located inside Chicot State Park. There is a visitor center by the parking lot and beyond that is miles of hiking trails. We spent about 2 hours walking on the trails. We saw tons of armadillos!

This armadillo was digging for grubs next to the boardwalk and didn't even notice us. I was able to sneak close to him and take a picture. The grubs must have been deep in the soil because he was halfway buried in the dirt.

One of the boardwalks at the arboretum.

The best part of our stay at Chicot was the raccoons that visited our cabin at night. We were sitting outside by the camp fire and heard some animals walking up behind us. We got the flashlights out and saw three raccoons! They smelled our hot dogs and wanted us to feed them. We didn't give them our food, although one raccoon climbed on the picnic table and tried to pull a plate out of Dave's hand! They stayed by our camp fire around 20 minutes and then moved on to another cabin in search of food.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-53970939163402630992011-10-24T16:23:00.000-05:002011-10-24T16:23:46.076-05:00Support Your Local Independent Nursery MonthPam from Digging has declared October "Support Your Local Independent Nursery Month" so today I am featuring my go-to garden center---Louisiana Nursery. The main reason I love Louisiana Nursery is the sales! At the end of the year all tropical plants are reduced 90%. Can't beat that. They also have many stores located around Baton Rouge and one in Prairieville. I frequent the Perkins Road and Prairieville location often, but the Perkins Road nursery is my favorite and thats where these pictures were taken.
The mums were so pretty! LA Nursery has so many colors to choose from. Mums look so nice for holiday displays! Don't forget to plant your mums in a sunny spot in your garden. They are perennials so they will come back every year and bloom a few times a year too.
This petunia was the most interesting petunia I've seen. It looks black and gold, just like the New Orleans Saints! Maybe thats why this was the last one. Around here anything that is black/gold or purple/gold goes quick!
Pansies are great cool season plants. LA Nursery has plenty of color choices but everyone was filling their cart with the purple and gold pansies! Go LSU Tigers!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-52605339903421813092011-10-22T07:06:00.000-05:002011-10-22T07:06:52.823-05:00Red Stick Farmer's MarketEvery Saturday local farmers meet in downtown Baton Rouge to sell their produce at the farmer's market. The market is not limited to just fruits and vegetables, you can find a grandma/grandpa team selling freshly baked bread, jelly, or pies. I'm always tempted to buy bread and this time I caved in a bought an $8 loaf of chocolate bread!

When we got home, I tore a section off and microwaved it for 10 seconds. That made it so soft and gooey. I need to go back and get another loaf! The bakers of my chocolate bread are a husband and wife team who are retired and started a second career baking. They are located in Plaquemine (right across the river from me) and had a wide assortment of different breads for sell. Once I saw the chocolate bread I didn't want anything else!
Dave picked up another 2 pound jug of honey for $12. Thats a good price considering what Walmart sells honey for. He buys the River Road honey and it tastes alot better than anything you'd buy at Walmart.
The plant vendors are at the entrance to the farmer's market. I almost bought more catnip for Ginger (outside cat) but I passed it by. Looking back, I don't know why I didn't buy the catnip. It was a healthy plant at a good price.....
We found a great deal on a 3G red hibiscus that was 90% off! We only paid $1.80 for it! I picked a hibiscus that I could separate into two plants so I really got two hibiscus for $1.80. The plants were root bound and needed to be re-potted; now they are looking great! Here are some other plants I bought:

This is an aloe but I don't know the name of it. Didn't come with a tag. Maybe David from Tropical Texana can identify it for me. He has lots of aloes and agaves.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675992729505588129.post-28349859296697497772011-10-01T08:07:00.001-05:002011-10-01T08:30:50.535-05:00Out and AboutDave and I were off work Wed-Sat and we spent time at local attractions.

Wednesday we visited the WWII museum in New Orleans. The museum has volunteer WWII veterans at the museum and we talked to an 85 year old veteran who served in the Navy and told us lots of stories about piloting boats in the Pacific. He talked to us for at least 30 minutes and even showed us a picture of him and his wife on their wedding day in 1954. They are still married today.

Thursday we went fishing at Sherburne WMA. This is a great place to see wildlife! We saw a Barred Owl, lots of rabbits and deer, and a few cardinals.

We came across this bridge but it was too high to fish off of. It was a pretty place though.
This is a sign that was by the bridge. There are several signs like this one located across the WMA and it gives you local info about the wildlife.
We saw these bushes all over the place! Its called Beautyberry and the birds love the berries!

Friday we went to Port Hudson State Historic Site. This was a Civil War battle site that the North eventually captured. The Confederate troops held off the Union for 48 days. Port Hudson was the longest siege in American military history! They have a small museum that has Civil War artifacts.
Port Hudson has trails through the woods where battles took place. One strategy that the Confederate soldiers used was to dig deep trenches and fire upon the enemy from these trenches. They were also a way for the soldiers to move around the field without the Union troops seeing them. These ditches are called earthworks and can still be seen today!

This is one of the trails we walked on. Every now and then, we saw a sign telling about a battle that took place at that spot on the trail.

Port Hudson is a great place to visit if you like history, they even have Civil War re-enactments there in March. I've never been to one, but we're going to go next March.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17289188261974952583noreply@blogger.com1
